When my family moved to our block in 2015 we heard that our neighbors used to put out luminaries during the holidays. With the help of our wonderful neighbors, we started up this tradition again. In 2019, I had reached out to northeast Oak Park neighbors and we had a handful of blocks participate on the same night. In 2020, I posted to more groups on Facebook and the event grew to over 200 blocks in Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park and it has continued to grow since then. We typically have put out luminaries on the Solstice or the closest Saturday to it. The meaning can be whatever you want it to be, but for us it is a magical evening that brings a sense of community and warmth to everyone. This year we are hoping to get even more blocks involved and spread the joy. 

 

We encourage you to reach out to your neighbors and participate in this years "Light Up The Night" event. Blocks around Oak Park, River Forest, Forest Park, Galewood and beyond will be lit up on December 16th 2023 (if it is raining or too windy we will postpone until the 17th). Take an evening stroll with your family and friends and admire the beauty that surrounds you. May peace, joy, and warmth surround you.
